A honeycomb mailer is one of the few pieces of packaging a customer handles before they see the product inside it, which makes it genuine, low-cost brand real estate if you print on it, and a wasted opportunity if you leave it blank. This page covers how custom-branded honeycomb mailers actually work, what to specify, and where the branding budget is best spent.
Why the mailer is worth branding
Unlike a shipping carton that often gets discarded before the customer sees the product, a mailer is opened in the customer’s hands. A printed mailer turns that moment into a recognisable, repeatable brand touchpoint, the same parcel, the same colours, the same print, every time a customer orders. That consistency is what builds recognition over a series of orders, not a single striking design used once.
What can actually be printed on a honeycomb mailer
- Full-colour or spot-colour print on the outer kraft surface, logo, brand colours, a pattern, or a simple wordmark.
- A tear-strip or seal call-out, printed instructions or a branded arrow at the opening point, useful alongside a tear-strip closure.
- A returns or care message printed on the inside flap, visible only once opened, a small, low-cost touch that adds to the unboxing without extra print area.
What to get right before you print
- Design for kraft, not white stock. Kraft paper takes colour differently to white, test your artwork on the actual stock before a full run, not on a screen proof.
- Keep contrast in mind. Light colours and fine detail read poorly on brown kraft, bold, simple marks generally print cleaner and stay legible.
- Plan around the flap and seal. Print placement has to account for where the mailer folds and seals, artwork that crosses that line can end up obscured or wasted.
- Check your minimum order quantity early. Custom print runs carry a setup cost, so the MOQ is usually higher than for a plain stock mailer, plan volume accordingly.
Getting a sample before the full run
A proof on screen and a printed sample in hand often look different, particularly on kraft. Always ask for a physical sample of your artwork on the actual mailer stock and size before committing to a production run, this is standard practice and a supplier should offer it without pushback.
Branding without the print budget
If a full custom print run does not suit your volume yet, a plain kraft honeycomb mailer paired with a printed sticker, a branded thank-you card, or custom-printed water activated tape as the seal still delivers a branded unboxing at a much lower minimum order quantity, and can be upgraded to full mailer printing once volume supports it.

Frequently asked questions
Can honeycomb mailers be custom printed?
Yes, full-colour or spot-colour print is available on the outer kraft surface, along with printed detail on the tear-strip or inside flap.
Does branding change the mailer’s protection?
No, printing sits on the surface of the kraft and does not affect the honeycomb cushioning layer underneath.
What if my order volume is too low for a custom print run?
Use plain kraft mailers with a printed sticker, branded card, or custom-printed sealing tape instead, then move to full mailer printing once your volume supports the minimum order quantity.
