“Box tape” is not one product. It is a family of carton-sealing tapes that differ mainly in their adhesive, and the right choice depends on how heavy your cartons are, how long they sit in storage, what temperature they see, how fast your line runs, and whether the carton needs to recycle cleanly. This is a plain comparison of the main types, water activated tape included, so you can match the tape to the job.

The two layers of any box tape
A box tape has a backing and an adhesive. The backing gives the tape its strength and feel: biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) is the common clear or tan plastic film; PVC is thicker and more conformable; paper (kraft) is used for water activated and self-adhesive paper tapes. The adhesive is what actually holds, and it is where the real differences are.
Acrylic tape (BOPP backing, water-based acrylic adhesive)
The low-cost all-rounder. Acrylic has a slower initial grab than hot-melt, but it holds a stable bond across a wide temperature range (roughly −20°C to 80°C), resists UV, and does not yellow with age. That makes it the sensible choice for cartons that go into long-term storage, outdoor holding areas, or cold-chain logistics. It is usually cheaper than hot-melt and works well on light and medium cartons.
Weak points: the slow initial tack can mean flaps lift on a fast manual line before the bond builds, and it grips poorly on dusty or heavily recycled board.
Hot-melt tape (BOPP backing, synthetic rubber and resin adhesive)
The high-speed workhorse. Hot-melt combines high initial tack with strong holding power, so it grabs instantly and stays put. It is the default on automatic case sealers and fast manual benches, and it performs well on a range of carton surfaces.
Weak points: it is usually the most expensive plastic tape, its temperature range is narrower (about −10°C to 70°C), and it degrades over time, cracking and yellowing, so it is a poor choice for cartons that will sit in storage for months.
Natural rubber tape (BOPP or paper backing, natural rubber adhesive)
Aggressive, immediate tack. Natural rubber sticks to difficult surfaces, including dusty, cold, or high-recycled-content board, where acrylic struggles. Useful for reclaimed cartons and less-than-ideal warehouse conditions.
Weak points: a narrow service temperature range, poorer ageing than acrylic, and it can be messier to work with.
PVC tape (PVC backing, rubber or acrylic adhesive)
Thicker, stronger and more conformable than BOPP, with a controlled, quieter unwind and a clean hand tear on some grades. Favoured for heavier cartons sealed by hand and where presentation matters.
Weak points: more expensive per metre, and PVC is less favoured on environmental grounds than polypropylene or paper.
Water activated tape (paper backing, starch adhesive)
The odd one out, because it is not pressure-sensitive: the starch adhesive is dry until a dispenser wets it, and then it bonds into the top fibre layer of the carton rather than sitting on the surface. That gives it high shear strength, a tamper-evident seal (any opening attempt tears the board), and one big advantage the plastic tapes do not have: the sealed carton recycles in the kerbside paper stream with the tape left on. It comes in natural kraft or white, plain or reinforced with fibreglass for heavy cartons.

Filament and strapping tape
Filament tape is a backing embedded with fibreglass or polyester strands running lengthways. It is for reinforcing a heavy carton, bundling items, or holding a pallet load, not for the primary flap seal. Think of it as an add-on, not a substitute for a sealing tape.

How to choose
- Long-term or outdoor storage, temperature swings: acrylic BOPP.
- Fast line, cartons shipped soon: hot-melt BOPP, or water activated on a dispenser.
- Dusty, cold, or high-recycled-content board: natural rubber, or water activated (it bonds into the fibres).
- Recyclability and a tamper-evident seal matter: water activated paper.
- Heavy cartons: reinforced water activated, or a plastic tape plus filament reinforcement.
- Quiet pack area: low-noise BOPP (a heavier release coat), or water activated (a dispenser is quiet).
- Very low volume: a hand roll of acrylic or hot-melt BOPP; a water activated dispenser will not pay back.
