“Glue tape” is a loose term. People use it for water activated gummed tape, and sometimes for the hot-melt glue that a case sealer lays down instead of tape. Both are ways of gluing a carton shut, and they work differently from the clear plastic tape on a hand gun. This guide explains the three real methods by how they actually bond, and what a failed seal is telling you.

The two parts of any bond
Mechanical interlocking: the adhesive, while liquid or soft, flows into the microscopic pores and fibre gaps of the surface, then hardens. It is now physically keyed in place, like roots in soil.
Molecular (specific) adhesion: at the contact points, the adhesive and the surface attract each other at a molecular level, through hydrogen bonds and other short-range forces. This needs genuine, close contact, which is why a dusty or greasy surface bonds poorly.
A good carton seal uses both. The differences between glue, gummed tape and plastic tape come down to how much of each they get, and how deep into the board they reach.
Three ways a seal fails
- Adhesive failure: the bond lets go cleanly at the interface, leaving the surface bare. Usually a surface problem: dust, wax, coating, moisture, or not enough contact pressure.
- Cohesive failure: the adhesive itself splits, leaving a film on both surfaces. Often an old, degraded, or over-thick adhesive.
- Substrate failure (fibre tear): the carton surface tears away with the tape or glue. The bond was stronger than the board. For a carton seal this is the target outcome.
When you pull a seal off a carton, which of these you see tells you whether the problem is the surface, the adhesive, or nothing at all.
Method 1: Hot-melt glue
On a carton erector or case sealer, nozzles spray molten polymer (an EVA or metallocene hot-melt) onto the flap, which is then pressed closed. The glue flows into the flute openings and the liner fibres while liquid, then sets hard in a second or two as it cools. The result is a strong, permanent, mechanically keyed bond with no tape visible on the carton.
It is the standard in high-volume manufacturing and filling lines, where cartons are formed and sealed by machine. It is not re-openable without tearing the board, and it needs a glue system on the line, so it is not a pack-bench option for most businesses.
Method 2: Water activated gummed tape
A kraft paper strip coated with a dry starch adhesive. A dispenser wets it; the starch hydrates, flows into the porous liner, and hydrogen-bonds to the cellulose fibres of both the tape and the carton. As it dries it sets rigid, keyed into the board.
Because the bond is into the fibres, the normal failure mode is fibre tear: you cannot lift the tape without pulling up the carton surface, which is exactly what makes it tamper-evident. It also means the seal does not rely on a clean, sized surface, so it works on recycled and lower-grade board. And because the adhesive is starch, the whole carton recycles together. Method 3: Pressure-sensitive plastic tape
A BOPP or PVC film coated with a permanently tacky viscoelastic adhesive (acrylic, hot-melt rubber, or natural rubber). Under finger or roller pressure the soft adhesive “wets out” against the carton surface and forms molecular contact. There is some shallow mechanical keying into surface fibres, but most of the bond is surface contact, not penetration.
That is why plastic tape can be peeled and re-laid with little trace (surface contact releases cleanly), why it is not tamper-evident, and why it struggles on dusty or heavily recycled board (nothing solid to wet out against). Its failure modes are usually adhesive (clean peel) or, on old tape, cohesive (residue left behind).

“Glue tape”, the term
Most people who search for “glue tape” or “water activated glue tape” mean gummed paper tape: a tape whose adhesive behaves like a glue, because it is applied wet and dries hard rather than staying tacky. It is not the pre-applied double-sided “glue tape” runners used in craft and stationery, and it is not loose hot-melt glue, though all three are gluing something shut.
Reading a failed seal
- Tape peeled off clean, carton surface intact: weak bond. Check for dust, coating, moisture, cold, or too little pressure on application.
- Carton fibres stuck to the tape: strong bond. The board gave before the seal did. This is what you want; if the carton still failed, the issue is the board grade or the fill, not the seal.
- Sticky residue on the carton, tape came away: cohesive failure. Usually old or heat-damaged pressure-sensitive tape.
- Seal intact but the flap tore beside it: the seal outperformed the carton. Move up a board grade or add edge protection.
