Food fulfilment adds two constraints to normal pick and pack: the product can spoil, and it is regulated. Whether you ship ambient grocery lines, chilled meal kits or frozen goods, the packaging has to keep the product safe to eat, hold temperature for the transit time, and meet labelling and traceability rules, all without blowing out the freight bill. This guide covers how food pick and pack works and how to choose packaging that meets the end goal.
What makes food pick and pack different
- Food safety. Packaging in contact with food must be food-grade; handling must follow your food-safety plan.
- Temperature. Chilled and frozen orders need insulated packaging and coolant sized to the longest realistic transit time, not the average.
- Shelf life. Picking should be first-expired-first-out, and dispatch has to be quick so the customer gets usable shelf life.
- Traceability. Batch and best-before information has to stay with the order.
- Weight and crushing. Grocery cartons are dense and stack on pallets, so board grade and seal strength matter.
The workflow is the standard pick and pack process with food-safe handling and temperature control layered on.
Choosing food packaging by order type
| Order type | Packaging |
|---|---|
| Ambient grocery, pantry lines | Right-sized food-grade cartons, paper void fill, water activated tape seal |
| Chilled meal kits, dairy, produce | Insulated liner or box, gel packs sized to transit time, food-grade inner bags |
| Frozen goods | Insulated box, dry ice or high-capacity gel, clear frozen labelling |
| Bakery and fragile items | Rigid carton with fitted inserts or honeycomb protection |
| Dry snack or small food ecommerce | Right-sized kraft mailer or carton with a food-grade inner |
Where the money is: temperature sizing and right-sizing
Size the thermal packaging to the worst case
Under-specifying insulation or coolant to save cost causes spoilage claims that cost far more. Test your insulated pack against the longest transit and the hottest conditions it will actually see, then set that as the standard.
Right-size everything else
Carriers bill on the greater of actual and dimensional weight. An oversized food carton pays freight on air and needs more void fill and more coolant to hold temperature. Profile your orders by size and run the smallest set of formats that fits. See where pick and pack fees come from.
Seal for a stacked pallet
A strip of water activated tape top and bottom bonds into the board and holds a dense carton through pallet stacking and handling.
In-house or a food 3PL?
Food fulfilment is one of the areas where a specialist 3PL can genuinely add value: temperature-controlled storage, audited food-safety systems and cold-chain carrier relationships are expensive to build in-house. If you outsource, you still specify the packaging, the thermal spec, the carton range and the food-grade inners. Compare using contract packing versus smart in-house packaging. Carewell Group can support storage and dispatch and supply the packaging; we are not a food contract packing, co-packing or filling service.

Frequently asked questions
What is pick and pack for food?
The warehouse process of picking each item in a food order first-expired-first-out, handling it to your food-safety plan, packing it with the right food-grade and thermal packaging, and dispatching it quickly so the customer gets usable shelf life.
How do I stop chilled and frozen orders spoiling?
Size the insulation and coolant to the longest realistic transit and hottest conditions, not the average, and right-size the box so it is not wasting cooling capacity on empty space.
How does packaging affect food freight cost?
An oversized carton pays dimensional-weight freight on air and needs more void fill and coolant. A right-sized, well-sealed carton costs less to ship and holds temperature better.
Does Carewell do food co-packing?
No. Carewell supplies food-grade and thermal packaging and can support storage and dispatch. We are not a food contract packing, co-packing or filling service.
