“Brown paper tape” is an ambiguous name. It can mean a self-adhesive kraft tape that sticks like plastic tape, a water activated gummed tape that needs wetting, a fibreglass-reinforced version of that, or a flatback kraft tape used for splicing and masking. They look similar on the roll and behave very differently. This guide sorts out the family so you order the right one.

The fork in the road: self-adhesive or water activated
Every brown paper tape is one or the other:
- Self-adhesive (pressure-sensitive): the roll is tacky as supplied. You pull, stick and press, like clear packing tape. The backing is paper; the adhesive is rubber or acrylic.
- Water activated (gummed): the roll is dry and not tacky. A dispenser wets a starch coating, which then bonds into the carton and dries hard.
If a product page does not make this clear, look for “gummed”, “water activated” or “requires a dispenser” (water activated) versus “self-adhesive” or “peel and stick” (pressure-sensitive).
Self-adhesive kraft paper tape
A kraft paper backing with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, often natural rubber for a strong immediate grab. It looks like paper, tears by hand, takes pen and stamp, and applies with a normal tape gun.
Used for: carton sealing where a paper look is wanted without a water dispenser, bundling, and light-duty closing. It is a reasonable middle ground, but the adhesive is still a PSA, so it is not as clean a recycling story as gummed tape, and it sits on the surface rather than bonding in, so it is not tamper-evident.
Water activated gummed kraft paper tape
Kraft paper with a dry starch adhesive. Wetted by a dispenser, the starch penetrates the carton liner and hydrogen-bonds to the fibres, drying rigid. Pulling it off tears the board, which is what makes it tamper-evident.
Used for: carton sealing where recyclability, security and a strong fibre bond matter. It needs a dispenser and water, and it will not bond to plastic or coated surfaces. This is the tape covered in the water activated tape guide.
Reinforced gummed kraft paper tape
The same starch adhesive and kraft backing, with a cross-pattern of fibreglass yarns laminated between two paper plies. It resists splitting along its length and holds heavy, double-wall and export cartons with a single strip. See reinforced vs non-reinforced for the weight bands.
Flatback kraft tape
A smooth (non-crepe) kraft paper with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, made for a clean hand tear and a low profile. It is a specialty tape: splicing rolls of material, tabbing, holding during assembly, edge masking on some finishing jobs, and light bundling. It is not a carton-sealing tape, though it is often shelved near them.
Printed and coloured kraft tape
Both the self-adhesive and the water activated types can be custom printed or supplied in white or a colour. Printing does not change how the tape sticks; a printed water activated tape still bonds into the fibres and still recycles, provided water-based inks are used. See printed water activated tape.
How to tell which one you need
- Do you want it to recycle with the carton, no removal? Water activated (or reinforced) gummed tape.
- Do you need a tamper-evident seal? Water activated gummed tape.
- Do you want a paper look but no dispenser or water? Self-adhesive kraft tape.
- Are cartons heavy, double-wall or export? Reinforced gummed tape.
- Splicing, tabbing or masking, not sealing? Flatback kraft tape.
- Very low volume, occasional use? Self-adhesive kraft on a hand gun; a gummed-tape dispenser will not pay back.

Is brown paper tape the same as water activated tape?

Which brown paper tape recycles with the box?
