For most cartons, tape just holds the flaps shut. For high-value goods, controlled goods, and anything that moves through multiple hands, the seal is a security control: it has to make unauthorised opening hard, and make any opening obvious. Reinforced water activated tape does both jobs in one step, which is why electronics, pharmaceutical and high-value retail shippers use it.

Why water activated tape is tamper-evident by nature
Plastic (pressure-sensitive) tape sticks to the outer paper liner of the carton and sits on the surface. A “press and grab” thief can push a flap open, take an item, and press the tape back down with no visible trace.
Water activated tape is different. The starch adhesive hydrates and penetrates the top fibre layer of the board, and a reinforced tape effectively welds paper to paper. You cannot lift it without tearing the carton surface, and you cannot re-seal that tear invisibly. Every opening attempt leaves evidence. That property is free: it comes with the tape, with no special “security” product required.
Heavy-duty grade: making the seal hard to breach
Tamper evidence tells you a carton was opened. A heavy-duty grade makes opening it harder in the first place:
- Reinforced construction. Fibreglass yarns laminated between kraft sheets resist cutting and splitting, so the seal cannot simply be sliced along its length.
- Weight rating. Heavy grades (around 260 to 280) hold cartons up to ~25 to 34 kg with a single strip, so the seal is not the weak point on a full carton.
- Full H-pattern, top and bottom. One strip along each seam and across each end, both faces, so there is no unsealed edge to lever open.
- Pallet and crate sealing. Reinforced water activated tape also seals the join between a carton and a pallet lid, or the seam of a timber crate liner, extending the tamper-evident seal to the unit load.

Printed security messaging
Custom print turns a seal into an instruction. Common security messages:
- STOP or SECURITY SEALED
- CHECK SEAL BEFORE ACCEPTING DELIVERY
- DO NOT ACCEPT IF TAPE IS DAMAGED
- A batch or route code, so a specific consignment’s seal can be verified
The message does two things: it deters casual interference, and it prompts the receiver to actually look at the seal instead of signing without checking. Black and coloured security tape
Dark tape, black especially, has three practical uses in a security context:
- Tears show. A pale scuff or a re-taped patch is more obvious against black than against natural kraft.
- Visible deterrent. A distinctive dark or coloured seal signals “this is controlled” from across a dock.
- Brand plus security. A branded colour seal does the deterrent job and the brand job at once.
Coloured water activated tape still bonds and still recycles; the pigment is in the paper or a water-based coating.
Water activated tape vs void security tape
They work by different mechanisms and are complementary:

For a paper carton, reinforced water activated tape is the primary tamper-evident seal. Add a void label over the seam as well for very high-value goods or where a specific, unambiguous “VOID” message is required for a claims process.
The honest limit: evident, not proof
Water activated tape is tamper-evident, not tamper-proof. A determined thief with time and a fresh carton can still get to contents; what they cannot do is hide that it happened. That means the seal only delivers value if the chain actually inspects it. A tamper-evident seal that nobody checks is just tape.
Making it work: the receiving process
- Brief receivers. Every person who signs for a carton should know to look at the seal first.
- Inspect before signing. Check the tape is intact along every seam, not slit and re-laid, with no mismatched patches.
- Photograph anything suspicious before opening, next to the shipping label.
- Note it on the proof of delivery and refuse or conditionally accept per your policy.
- Escalate to the sender and carrier immediately; a same-day report supports an insurance claim.
- Open damaged cartons under a second person’s eyes and record the contents check.
The sender’s side: seal to a consistent standard (grade, pattern, print), so a receiver can tell a correct seal from a tampered one.
By industry
- Electronics and technology. High resale value, small items, prime pilferage targets. Reinforced heavy grade, printed STOP messaging, often a void label as well.
- Pharmaceutical and therapeutic goods. Chain-of-custody and regulatory expectations around integrity. Tamper-evident sealing plus batch coding on the tape.
- High-value retail, jewellery, watches. Small, valuable, discreet. Dark branded security tape and a strict receiving check.
- Bonded, customs and export freight. Multiple handling points and long dwell times. Reinforced heavy grade, full H-pattern, pallet-lid sealing.
- Government, defence and controlled-goods logistics. Documented seal standards and inspection at every transfer.
- Cash-adjacent and document security. Sealed satchels and cartons where opening must be provable.
