water activated gummed paper tape nearby

“Gummed paper tape” is the trade term for what is now more often called water activated tape. If you have searched for gummed paper tape “nearby”, the term itself is a clue to where to buy it: this is a packaging-trade product, not a retail one, and the supply channel affects price, range and support.

Key points

  • “Gummed paper tape”, “gummed tape” and “water activated tape” are the same product: kraft paper with a dry starch adhesive activated by water.
  • It is sold through packaging suppliers, not general hardware or stationery retailers, which carry little or none.
  • Trade supply means the full grade range, dispensers, spares, print options, trade pricing and advice.
  • Carewell supplies it nationally from NSW warehousing and will work to your required minimum order quantity.

Why the term matters

“Gummed” refers to the adhesive, historically a “gum” and now a plant starch. It is the older name, still used by long-established suppliers and in trade catalogues. “Water activated tape” (WAT) is the current term and describes the mechanism. If a supplier lists “gummed paper tape”, “gummed kraft tape” or “water activated tape”, they mean the same thing. The naming guide covers the other terms in use.

Where the trade buys it

Gummed paper tape is a business-to-business packaging product. General retailers that stock any paper tape usually carry the self-adhesive kraft type, not gummed tape, and never the dispensers or spares. Packaging suppliers carry:

  • Non-reinforced and reinforced grades, in the standard widths.
  • Manual and electric dispensers and their wear parts.
  • Custom-printed tape in water-based inks.
  • Trade quantities and pricing, and staff who can spec it against your cartons.

Buying well through the trade channel

  • Specify properly: “gummed” or “water activated”, reinforced or non-reinforced, and the width (48, 70, 72 or 76 mm).
  • Ask for samples to test on your real cartons before a full order.
  • Buy the dispenser from the same supplier so spares and support are in one place.
  • Order to a buffer: plan a week or two of stock so a bench never runs dry, especially over peak season.
