A sealed carton on your pack bench and the same carton at the customer’s door have had very different days. In between it has been dropped off a sorter, run along conveyors, stacked under heavier cartons, and left in a hot trailer or a container for hours or weeks. The seal has to hold through all of that. Water activated tape does, because it bonds into the board rather than sitting on top of it.

What a carton goes through

  • Sortation drops. Automated sorters drop parcels onto belts and into chutes. A fall of half a metre onto a hard surface is routine, and it lands on a corner or an edge as often as flat.
  • Conveyor runs and transfers. Repeated small impacts at every belt-to-belt transfer.
  • Multi-level stacking. In a trailer or a cage, your carton may sit near the bottom with a column of heavier cartons on top for the whole line-haul. That is sustained compression on the seams, not a one-off.
  • Dwell time and environment. Heat in a trailer, cold on a tarmac, dust in a cross-dock, humidity swings in a container. Long dwell times find any weak adhesive.
  • Manual handling. Thrown, slid, walked on, grabbed by the flaps.

Plastic tape can peel at a corner after a few of these; heat and dust accelerate it. Water activated tape has knitted into the board, so the failure mode shifts from “the tape let go” to “the carton itself gave out”, which is a much higher bar.

Sealing by shipping mode

Individual parcels (courier / express)

  • Grade: non-reinforced for light single-wall cartons up to a few kilos; step to a light reinforced grade (around 240) once cartons are heavier or the contents are dense.
  • Pattern: full H-pattern top and bottom (one strip along the centre seam, one across each end).
  • Why: every parcel is handled individually and sorted, so every seam is exposed.

Less-than-truckload (LTL) and general freight

  • Grade: reinforced, mid grade. Cartons are handled loose, re-stacked at depots, and sit under mixed freight.
  • Pattern: H-pattern both faces; consider a C-clip (strip wrapping onto the end panels) on heavier cartons.

Palletised unit loads

  • Grade: non-reinforced can be enough if the carton stays strapped to the pallet and is not individually handled; reinforced if any carton will be broken out and shipped on.
  • Extra: run a strip across the carton-to-pallet-lid join for a tamper-evident unit seal.

Export and sea freight

  • Grade: reinforced heavy grade, every carton. Long transit, multiple handling points, humidity and temperature cycling, and dwell times measured in weeks.
  • Pattern: full H-pattern top and bottom, wider tape (up to 76 mm) on large or double-wall cartons.
  • Why: export cartons expose weak adhesive quickly through heat, dust and long dwell. See water activated tape for export shipments.

How to seal for the journey

  1. Right-size the carton. A carton with a lot of void space collapses under stacking no matter how well it is sealed. Fill it, or use a smaller carton or a mailer.
  2. Seal the bottom first, and properly. The bottom carries the contents’ weight in transit. Give it the same H-pattern as the top.
  3. H-pattern, centre out. One strip along the centre seam with overhang past each end, one strip across each end seam, pressed down firmly. Technique detail in how to use water activated tape.
  4. Match grade to mode using the section above.
  5. Add edge protection for heavy or fragile cartons; the tape seals, it does not stiffen a weak box.
  6. Keep the seal consistent. A dispenser gives every carton the same strip length and pressure, which matters when a claims assessor is comparing cartons.

The damage-claims angle

When a carrier delivers a damaged carton, the claim needs proof the item left your facility intact. A consistent, tamper-evident paper seal helps:

  • It shows the carton was properly closed, not under-taped.
  • Because it cannot be peeled and re-laid, an intact seal on a damaged carton points to impact or crushing in transit rather than a packing fault.
  • A dated pack photo of the sealed carton, plus a standard sealing spec, strengthens the file.

It will not win every claim, but “we seal every carton to this standard with tamper-evident tape” is a stronger position than a peeled strip of clear tape.

When water activated tape is not the right seal for shipping

  • Poly satchels and mailers. No bond to plastic. Use a self-seal satchel or a printed polypropylene tape.
  • Cold-chain and frozen. The adhesive and the carton surface do not cooperate at low temperature or with condensation.
  • Waxed, laminated or coated cartons. No fibre to bond into.
  • Very low volume. A few parcels a week does not justify a dispenser; a hand roll of paper or BOPP tape is simpler.
